Gameplay - I've had my eye on this game for a while, and downloaded it as soon as I could, expecting a great game. What I found was only decent. The game has huge potential that just was not exploited. Still, there were many features that make it worth a look. First and
foremost, is the fact that you can shoot through walls! This may not sound like much, but believe me, it is very fun. Hiding in a wooden storehouse and blasting soldiers through the side is sweet! However, the AI is very good at it also. Maybe a little too good. Their guns will continue to track you through walls as you take cover, providing fun, but sometimes
frustrating action. Also, there are no holes in the walls that you have shot, just decals. I know it's not too much to ask for some real
friggin' holes, but almost every single game takes the crappy shortcut of pasting cheap decals on to stuff. One
notable exception, was the game Kingpin, Life of Crime, that actually showed exit wounds. I would
recommend that you read the review of on the previous page.
The
A.I. is nothing out of the ordinary. The enemy soldiers are not especially
smart. For instance, when you come into a room with soldiers in it, they will run around in a half-circle, and then shoot at you. This is very annoying. Another annoying fact, is that
characters turn very sharply, turning from facing point A to point B in only one frame. This means that if you try and sneak up on a guy for a quiet stabbing, he will turn around without
warning, and blast you one. There are some positives, though. One good thing is, that the
A.I. snipers are very good, and do not
consistently miss. Another good point, is that when you throw a grenade at enemies, they actually run for cover!, not just stand there,
completely oblivious. The enemies also occasionally take advantage of walls, hiding behind them and taking pot shots at you. They may even on occasion chuck a flash-bang at you!
Speaking of weapons, I really liked the array of weaponry in this game. You start off with a silenced MP5, a
glock, and a knife. The glock, you will be happy to know, can be shot as fast as you can click the mouse, there is no annoying trigger-timer, like in Half-Life (praise be its name). The other weapons include an anti-personnel medium machine gun (that looks almost exactly like the one in Opposing Force), an AK-47, grenades, and the required sniper rifle. All these guns are correctly designed. The MP5 is silent but weak, the AK-47 is inaccurate but powerful, the machine gun is very
inaccurate, but damn fast, and so on.
Something I really liked about this game, is that most combat takes place outside, unlike most 1st person shooters. This leaves plenty of room for sniping and running. It also shows off the nice sky and
backgrounds, but after a while, there effects wore off.
Anyway, the games' fun factor is pretty high, in spite of all the negatives. Although, the readme and box said that you are supposed to sneak around, and avoid detection, I found this to be
extremely hard, and not to mention boring. I had plenty of time to experiment
with this, I took Day-quill at night and couldn't sleep worth a damn! Whats in that stuff? Anyway, in easy mode, the enemies can see you, but don't do anything. In hard mode, they can hear you through walls, and kick your ass! After being chased by provoked guards several times, I found shooting them to be way more fun, and still very effective.
