If they made the flames bigger around the company name, it would be perfect! There cannot be anything worse than having a lousy title out on the market. Except one thing. Having a lousy title on the market and thinking you are God's gift to the MMOG genre. Dark Age of Camelot will go down in history as a piece of false advertising. Half the game wasn't even itemized on release. Broken classes. Bugged Realm Vs. Realm design. End game failure. And about as much content that could make pong look exciting. What went wrong? Mythic has a history of over promising and under delivering. The Mark Jacob's public relations plan worked to make sure that base unit sales of DAOC were in the hundred thousand mark in the first week, but it surely didn't keep people subscribed. Let's take a peek at the numbers. What has to be over 300k+ base units sold, since 100k sold the first week in release. Supposedly over 200k+ subscribers. 25k online at peak times, and that number has actually fallen 15k from a month into the release. They are losing players faster by the day, and no one is stopping the leak. The only reason why they can tout so many subscribers, is because over zealous fans opted into a 6 month or 1 year locked subscription. Let's see what this number looks like after they fall off. To be quite honest, DAOC had remarkable promise. Of course that is what Mythic is good at, promises. But when it comes time to follow through on those promises, most of the time either the problem was beyond their control, or they didn't understand the pure fundamentals of MMOG design. Mythic didn't write the engine, they licensed it. That's not a big deal in FPS games or single player RPG's -- but when you need to constantly fix, patch and evolve the game, you need to know the underlying problems in the core of the engine itself that could cause those issues. Line of Sight bugs still plague the game today, and go unpatched due to this issue. Other addressed bugs screaming to be fixed by the player base still go unrecognized while they waited for the new version of their engine. Not to mention class balance is horrendous. Break it now, fix it later. But the later ends up being MUCH later. And 10 months later, 2 of the most wanted skill trades are not in the game. Mythic wanted a quick money maker, and they got it. But as far as being a big player in the MMOG market in the future with ANY game release, don't bet on it. Mythic shot themselves in the foot, and I highly doubt anyone will fall for the imaginary carrot on the string ever again. Guru Award: Worst ending Some people play games because they cannot wait to see what is going to happen when the story is completed. Even historical games, in which you already know the outcome, have at least an ending that will make you feel a little rewarded for your time playing. This game, did nothing of the sort. And even though it is one of the best games I have played to date, the ending left be standing their thinking my computer crashed
My God! Someone pass me a portable defib kit! My heart cannot take the excitement!!! This has to be, honestly, one of the best games I have ever played. Multiplayer is fun, the single player missions are great, and the beach landing mission is just incredible. Nothing else can describe it. But as far as the ending goes, I swear I think I saw something similar while playing River Raid on my Atari 2600 and I spilt pop on the console right before I blew up "That last bridge". If you think I am going to spoil the ending, I won't. There would have to be an ending to spoil. But if you do not want to know what the ending is, do not read the next line. Ok... Ready? This is what you get after playing through the toughest of battles. "The end". Centered in white, on a black background, and then the credits are ran. No prelude of what is to come in a possible expansion, no story about what our hero does next, nothing. He hops on a train, some guy makes a comment about a blown up building, and you see the end spattered. EA, for the love of all things holy, if you are reading, please have the designers show you a proper ending in today's gaming world, before you publish it. Thanks.
