Detail: The scenery is ever changing with sunlight, clouds, rain,
storms and snow to add to your ever-growing list of problems you face
while driving. The scenery will light up if there is lightning, you
may even see a strike to ground (I saw a couple, very authentic) If
you happen to be travelling through a muddy forest, during a storm,
your car will slowly become brown, this is not due to your bowels
releasing themselves as you head for a tree at 90mph, but it is due to
the mud being sprayed up the sides. There are many different road
surfaces do deal with, mud, ice, snow or tarmac; all throw up a unique
challenge. There is hardly any grip on the ice and snow, however there
is almost too much to handle on the squeaky asphalt. One of the most
rewarding things I have noticed is the backfire. You can watch as that
unburnt fuel flashes out of your exhaust pipe, when you take your foot
off the pedal.
The Cars: Before each race you can select your car, there are only
six cars to choose from at the beginning, and once you have selected
your vehicle you can set it up. Tyres, gearbox, suspension, etc are
all available to be changed. After a stage you may have hit a few
object on your way, so your car limps back to the garage to be
repaired. However, not all is good, you only have 60mins to fix the
car, and depending on how many things you hit, this may not be enough.
You have to choose which to fix, gearbox is always the first to fix,
and then it is up to you.
Arcade: For all you racers out there that can’t do without the
good old race against another car, there is Arcade mode. You can race
up to five other cars, on many tracks, in many countries. There is a
championship mode, this is fun, however as you can’t progress until
you have completed the previous level in a good position, it can get a
bit boring.
Network & Internet: The network option can have up to 8 other
players and the Internet option also 8 players. If you do not have a
network or Internet connection, then you can still have the split
screen option for you and your chum.
