The following two Scythe coolers are a hint more performance oriented. The Scythe Mugen 3B is priced at 33 EUR/USD. Making it very affordable. Version 3 of the Mugen provides higher compatibility with a new more compactly designed fin area...
The introduction of F.M.B.S.4 (Flip Mount Super Back-Plate 4) allows for higher compatibility with the latest motherboards. This universally compatible Back-Plate is capable of mounting large coolers very rigidly onto your motherboard.
The fan motor applied is a Slip Stream PWM 120 x 120 x 25mm small axis large fan blade model, which minimizes the noise at low load, as well as maximizing the performance of Mugen 3 at heavy load. The fan runs at the speed of 300 rpm (± 180rpm) ~ 1600 rpm (± 10%), generating an air flow of 14.7 CFM ~ 88.11 CFM at a noise level of 9.6 ~ 32.15 dBA. The overall cooling has been carefully designed to meet a wide range of cooling purposes, from silent cooling to extreme overclocking conditions.
By introducing the newly refined M.A.P.S. (Multiple Airflow Pass-through Structure) the total cooling performance has been upgraded by optimizing the pass-through function of the airflow and enhancement of the sturdiness of the heatsink. build a new, modern looking Katana-style CPU cooler, without sacrificing the compact dimensions of its predecessor. Katana 4 transports this idea into reality. The measurements are very similar to Katana 3, allowing, as before, the use in limited space environments.
The overall cooling performance has been increased by refining the M.A.P.S. (Multiple Airflow Pass-through Structure). Mugen 3 comes with the 'Slip Stream' PWM Silent fan, which minimizes the noise level at low load while maximizing the cooling performance at heavy load. This cooler has the worst mounting system ever. Very difficult to reach mounts. You should have a decent amount of space for memory including full profile memory.
Scythe Ninja rev 3B
Probably the most well known cooler from Scythe is the Ninja series. This is the Scythe Ninja rev 3B. The third edition of the Ninja CPU cooler comes along with a revised high-performance design. The Ninja 3 CPU cooler features eight u-shaped heatpipes and optimized fin structure named as M.A.P.S. (Multiple Airflow Pass-Through Structure). The airflow generated by the Scythe Slip Stream 120 PWM adjustable fan can effectively cool the heatsink.
The advanced M.A.P.S. (Multiple Airflow pass-through structure) is a completely new fin structure, where the airflow generated by the Scythe Slip Stream 120 PWM Adjustable fan will pass through. Ninja 3 fanless performance could be improved by up to 7% compared to the former model by using the M.A.P.S. in combination with eight heatpipe high-performance design.
With improved version of F.M.S.B (Flip Mount Super Back-Plate), the compatibility has been maximized as well as achieving the solid mounting of the cooler onto the motherboard. Scythe Ninja 3 provides broad socket compatibilities for AMD & Intel platform.
Equipped with Scythe original Slip Stream PWM 120mm PWM Adjustable fan, Ninja 3 allows user to choose the fully automatic PWM feature fan speed control or alternatively adjust the PWM band range to fulfill demands from silent to high performance users! (PCI Bracket Installation: Please remove the knob attached to the fan controller before installing into the PCI bracket. After the installation, please attach back the knob.)
Users can choose the fully automatic PWM feature fan speed control or alternatively adjust the PWM band range for tuning purposes. Several features make this cooler the perfect solution for silent users and overclockers! The F.M.S.B.2 backplate system provides a safe cooler mounting, guaranteed.
This cooler has the same horrific mounting system as the Mugen. Very difficult to reach mounts. I'm not a fan of the mounting system whatsoever. But we'll talk about it a bit more in the conclusion. Pricing wise, again we are looking at 35 EUR/USD products and that is definitely not expensive, it includes a small fan controller.
Gelid Tranquillo Rev 2
The 'Tranquillo' is a tower CPU Cooler that utilises four heatpipes and a special heatpipe constellation to achieve good heat transfer from the CPU core to the aluminum fins in its construction. After precise software simulation and calculation during the development stage a unique heatsink shape was created to lower airflow resistance as much as possible. A silent 120mm fan with the GELID PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) control has been chosen to make this heatsink more valuable.
4 Power Heatpipes
Intelligent PWM Fan Control Curve
Optimized Fan Blade
5 Years Warranty
The fan blades were optimised to guarantee high airflow while running silently. The intelligent GELID PWM curve keeps the fan silent when no unnecessary cooling is needed and accelerates the fan speed whenever additional cooling is needed. The multi-award winning high performance GC-2 thermal compound is already included in the package. This cooler can be spotted for roughly 30 EUR/USD. There's plenty of space for any DIMM you want to plant in there.
Traditional heatpipe arrangement of high-end heatsink heatpipes are usually soldered on one row. Therefore the heat absorption capacity of the outer heatpipe will be negatively affected when there are more than 5 heatpipes. To solve this problem a special array of heatpipes was used on the GX-7 to take full advantage of the heat transfer capacity all 7 6mm heatpipes. On the GX-7 two heatpipes were soldered on top of the three middle heatpipes.
7 Power Heatpipes
Unique Heatpipes Arrangement
Optimized Heatsink with Multi Air Channels
Wing 12 PL Blue Fan
PWM Fan Control
3 Years Warranty
The fins in the middle part of the heatsink of the GX-7 were designed in a V-shape. This allows the cooling air to reach the heatsink modules more evenly. Thanks to some openings inside of the heatsink and near the heatpipes fresh-air flows in from the top and the bottom to zones normally poorly ventilated and eliminates the creation of hotspots from building. The unique heatsink shape supports dual fans. This cooler can be spotted for roughly 35 EUR/USD. And here again, there's plenty of space for any DIMM you want to plant in there. you need to like that blue LED though as you can't really turn it off.
Noctua NH-D9L and NH-U9S CPU cooler review We test and review two new coolers from Noctua, the NH-D9L and NH-U9S CPU coolers. These small puppies can be used with any motherboard but focus on Micro ATX and Mini ITX. They are small, deadly sil...
CPU cooler group test review with 3770K In this review we test over a dozen CPU coolers, mainly heatpipe based. We'll test them on a Core i7 3770K. In this group test we'll use Scythe, Noctua, Coolink, Deepcool, Alpenfohn, Gelid and Cooler Master coolers.
Gelid GX-7 CPU cooler review Gelid is a company that made a nice impression a year or two ago introducing themselves by releasing their first aftermarket CPU cooler, the 'Silent Spirit' cooler. After Gelid released that Silent Spirit and then Tranqillo CPU coolers it was time for a new model. Progress is made and anno Q4 2011 it's time to release their third consumer grade CPU cooler. Their latest creation comes in the form of a tower cooler called GX-7 -- aimed at gamers apparently.
