The mother of all resolutions for PC gamers anno 2013 is WQHD aka QHD which is 2560x1440. A perfect blend of a nice 27" monitor versus nice pixel density is what that is all about. We feel that your gaming experince starts best with a Radeon HD 7950 or R9 280X. And for NVIDIA a GeForce GTX 770 and upwards will make ya giggle.
And last but not least the mac-daddy of monitor resolutions, on a 31" Ultra High Definition monitor gaming kicks ass .. well the graphics cards will get their asses kicked I mean. So yeah I mean .. waddup with that ! A single 780/Titan or 290X is the bare minimum, you'll likely end up disabling MSAA which will bring you in the 40'ies FPS wise. The GeForce GTX 690 caved in at this resolution, so the winner here is that Radeon HD 7990 my man.
