A Closer Look - Xense Soundcard
That is one sweet looking piece of audio technology. We see the phone jacks for both headphones and microphone connections along with the larger break out cable connector followed by the digital S/Pdif output.
Audio I/O: Headphones
The cards uses the larger 1/4" phone jacks usually seen on high end headphones although the bundle contains an adapter (inset) that allows you to use different headphones or microphones with smaller jacks.
Audio I/O: Multi-Channel
Here we see the surround sound break out cable connected. The card has full surround sound output on the cable allowing you to have both headphones and speakers connected simultaneously.
The S/Pdif digital output features a combo jack which offers both Coax and optical connection to those who want to use a digital component with the Xense such as an external DAC.
The cards internal headers, from left to right are laid out as follows; S/Pdif output, Auxiliary input and front panel audio header. The internal S/Pdif output can be used to connect to a Graphics card with S/Pdif input for HDMI audio output.
ASUS Xonar U7 review test and benchmarks. The U7 offers 24-bit/192KHz recording and playback with 114dB SNR, S/PDIF output, 7.1 channel analog output, dedicated stereo headphone output, a volume knob, and it's all powered of a USB 2.0 port. The headphone output comes with its own DAC and adjustable gain settings, making the U7 capable of driving just about any pair of headphones to ear-splitting levels.
