OCZ Synapse Cache SSD review

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 11/17/2011 02:00 PM [ 0 comment(s) ]

While OCZ just released the Revodrive Hybrid, they now also launch a seriously fast SSD just for caching. Combined with their Dataplex cache application software and your own HDD, the combination could be just what you are looking for, all at a much better price as well with no limitations to your hardware setup. It's armed with a SandForce 2281 controller and the means to use it, as alongside the SSD you get to use the very same cache software layer the RevoDrive Hybrid uses, Dataplex. A cache in combination with the Synapse SSD offers read speeds of up-to 550MB/s and write performance of up-to 490 MB/sec.

ADATA SH14 portable USB 3.0 HDD review

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 10/16/2011 01:00 PM [ 0 comment(s) ]

It's time to review another USB 3.0 storage unit. It's originates from ADATA and is called the Superior (not a pun) SH14. We test the 750GB version of this model which should bring us read performance of 90 MB/sec. ADATA's latest looks quite fashionable. Buried under red is a 2.5-inch, 5400RPM drive that's IPX4 water-resistant and "military grade shockproof."

OCZ RevoDrive Hybrid review

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 10/10/2011 01:00 PM [ 0 comment(s) ]

We review the RevoDrive Hybrid. The idea behind the device hints very much towards Intel's Rapid Storage technology where a HDD is being cached by a Nand flash storage unit. Being OCZ they are making it an enthusiast class performance product. The product we test today for example comes with a 1TB HDD, and a really large 100GB cache partition running over SF2281 controllers. OCZ then applies a mix of their VCA 2.0 technology

Corsair Force GT 120GB SSD review

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 07/27/2011 01:00 PM [ 0 comment(s) ]

We look at the Corsair Force GT, an all new SATA 3 SSD. Compared to the Force 3 the difference in-between the two products is to be found in its NAND flash memory, the GT will be a notch faster in throughput as it makes use of synchronous NAND flash memory, the recently tested regular 3 model will run one gear slower, yet still incredibly fast thanks to slightly cheaper asynchronous NAND flash memory. Both drives come with that SandForce SF-2281 controller to deliver at up to 555 MBps read and 515 MBps write speeds.

OCZ RevoDrive 3 X2 review

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 06/27/2011 01:00 PM [ 0 comment(s) ]

We'll be testing an engineering sample of that RevoDrive 3 X2 today. Let me just throw some numbers at you to get that tickly in your belly ; 1500 MB/s maximum read performance, or what about 1250 MB/s maximum write performance ? No that still didn't do it for you ... well what about 200.000 IOPS (4K writes) ? Yeah that is where we have arrived in the year 2011. It's insanely fast, it will be insanely expensive but it is most definitely insanely sexy.

Mushkin Blackline Ridgeback 2000 MHz DDR3 8GB review

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 06/23/2011 01:00 PM [ 0 comment(s) ]

Mushkin offers their dual-channel Blackline Ridgeback in 8GB kits at $125 (USD), and to spice that up .. it is offered as a 2000 MHz kit, with granted not the most sexy timings but at a CAS latency of 9 versus 2000 MHz versus two 4GB high-density DDR3 modules. At 125 USD , and that's 15.6 USD per GB, you can understand that this kit might be a nice alternative to low latency 1333 and 1600 MHz kits. Muskin even tops that off by a lifetime warranty on this product so all in all that can't be a bad deal, no Sir.

G.Skill Sniper 8GB CL7 DDR3 memory review

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 06/05/2011 01:00 PM [ 0 comment(s) ]

G.Skill designed another 8GB low voltage DDR3 kit (2x 4GB) that can be set at 1600 MHz yet still run a CAS latency of 7. And that is truly interesting because the denser the ICs get, the higher latency typically gets.

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 05/26/2011 01:00 PM [ 0 comment(s) ]

OCZ is about to inject an SSD into the market that is labeled Agility 3 SSD. What's the difference in-between Agility 2 and now 3 you might ask ? Well, two primary things really, controller and NAND flash memory type. Labeled with advertised speeds of of 525 MB/sec with write speeds of 500 MB/sec this product should be really interesting for many of you.

Being fashionably late to market with this product series the SSD series will sell at 64GB - $169 and 128GB - $289. Performance wise this drive should be as fast as the Vertex 2 series for example. Yeap, we peek at the new N series SSDs from Zalman.

OCZ RevoDrive X2 240GB review

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 12/19/2010 02:00 PM [ 0 comment(s) ]

We test the OCZ Revodrive X2, a concept that is close to that IBIS product, but also is not. Will this RAID based SSD solution be faster, slower or equal in performance relative to that IBIS ? Fact remains, today we'll pass 700 MB/sec of storage performance from something slapped onto a PCIe 4x slots and that is just frightening to test, that fast.

G.Skill 2x4GB CL7 1600 MHz Trident DDR3 review

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 11/25/2010 02:00 PM [ 0 comment(s) ]

We feel that more memory is rather important, and in that trend memory manufacturers have started to increase the density of DIMM modules. Where 1 and 2GB DIMM modules have been the standard, we now see very good progress in 4 GB DIMM modules. Today we\'ll do things a little different, G.Skill designed a 8GB low voltage DDR3 kit (2x 4GB) that can be set at 1600 MHz yet still run a CAS latency of 7. And that is truly interesting because the denser the ICs get, the higher latency typically gets.

OCZ IBIS SSD review

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 11/14/2010 02:00 PM [ 0 comment(s) ]

OCZ however introduced a new product line that is set to move and shake the ground a little more. The OCZ IBIS is a 3.5" Solid State Disk that is available in several volume sizes: 100, 160, 240, 360, 480, 720 and even a 960GB are available. The OCZ IBIS as tested today will pass 700 MB/sec in both read and write performance. It is so fast that it is nearly sickening.

OCZ RevoDrive 120GB review

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 08/31/2010 01:00 PM [ 0 comment(s) ]

We test and review the OCZ RevoDrive. Pretty much two SSDs slapped onto a PCB, armed with a RAID controller. Pop it in, install the new storage unit and you'll have tremendous performance right of the shelves without the need to configure anything. What OCZ did was done right. They smacked 120GB or alternatively 240 GB of the fastest NAND Flash memory on the PCB, armed that Flash memory with two separate 8-channel SandForce SSD ICs, then bind them to a SIS RAID controller, pop on a PCie x4 bridge and then offer a "PCIe SSD" (if you can call it that) reaching 300,k 400 even 500 MB/sec read and write speeds.

Corsair Force 120 (F120) SSD review

We test and review the F120 SSD from Corsair, and SSD with read and write performance close to 280~285 MB/sec. The SandForce based products by all means are not little wonders and miracles in each and every segment, but in some segments they make a distinct difference oppose to JMicron and Indilinx products. So today the turn goes to Corsair
