ASUS Sabertooth P67 TUF review

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 01/04/2011 02:00 PM [ 0 comment(s) ]

Today's tested product is by all means that, creative. A P67 motherboard from ASUS which comes with that new uEFI BIOS which has been discussed so much. It's the TUF Sabertooth P67 from ASUS, designed with a plastic shroud based on aerodynamics. The shield is part of what is called 'Thermal Armor' and it will be the primary trademark for this motherboard from here onwards, as whatever you might think of it, it's the signature of the motherboard.

ASUS Rampage III Gene review

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 10/18/2010 01:00 PM [ 0 comment(s) ]

Within that motto ASUS has it's own Gene series within the motherboard line up. Now if you put that on the X58 platform, it's called Rampage by ASUS. And then when this apocalyptic group of minions and demons called 'Republic of Gamers' aka ROG gets their hands on a product like this, you can expect improvements and extra overclock features.

ECS P55H-AK review

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 08/15/2010 01:00 PM [ 0 comment(s) ]

We test and review the ECS P55H-AK. It is with the release of this P55H-AK motherboard that ECS finally reaches a state in product development where they can address the enthusiast consumer market. A board loaded with features, great looks and quite decent overclockability. A motherboard where ECS went excessive on everything, dual GIGe Ethernet NICs, not one but two USB 3.0 controllers for 4 ports, integration of a SATA 3 (6G) controller, and even a NVIDIA NF200 bridge chip to enable three-way SLI. All in all a terrific P55 motherboard with excellent features and just really hot looks.

MSI 890FXA-GD70 review

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 07/04/2010 01:00 PM [ 0 comment(s) ]

Of course we were already fond of the 890GX chipset when it got released, but the FX chipset upped the ante a tiny bit more as next to the integration of SATA6G we see an increase in available PCIe lanes allowing 890FX motherboards to become very flexible in their bandwidth needs versus component usage. PCI-Express is key in the AMD 890FX release as we get PCIe 42 lanes at our disposal. Next to that, the chipset will be paired with the SB850 which we already covered in the 890GX review, it supports up-to 14 USB 2.0, up-to six SATA 6G ports and an integrated Gigabit Ethernet controller. This is the basis and infrastructure of your PC, the 890 FX chipset. It's that kind of flexibility that allows ODMs like MSI to make little gems motherboards out of that chipset. MSI's 890FXA-GD70 is loaded with features like the aforementioned, but also USB 3.0, automated overclock options and even five (physical) PCIe x16 slots and even core unlock functionality from within the BIOS.

If you want an X58 based platform and want to enjoy USB 3.0 and SATA3 6G, there really are no affordable alternatives on the market, until now that is. ASRock has released a new X58 motherboard. It's loaded with extra features yet comes with SATA3 and USB 3.0. It is up-to date, has some nice extras, and get this... will cost only 165 EUR or roughly 189 USD. That price alone sparked my interest for sure as this board would need to really blow if it's not worth that money. So today we'll have a look at the more budget conscious ASRock X58 Extreme3 motherboard.

MSI Big Bang X58 XPower review

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 05/25/2010 01:00 PM [ 0 comment(s) ]

We test and review the XPower from MSI. Last month Intel added a new processor in the line-up, the ever so strong Core i7 980 Extreme six-core processor. Seriously breathtaking, and to date the fastest consumer processor on the globe with very decent overclock potential as well. That was reason enough for most ODM to make new updates and revisions of the X58 chipset based motherboards, as next top the new processor we also have seen the gradual adoption of features like USB 3.0 and SATA3 6G. MSI is on of the ODMs releasing something really special, today we'll review the Big Bang X58 XPower motherboard. It is chucked full with the latest gadgets and features, it is equipped to make sure you get the very best overclock out of it and heck, even if you can't overclock, flick a button and the motherboard will do the work for you, completely automated.

Gigabyte 890GPA-UD3H (AMD 890GX) review

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 05/19/2010 01:00 PM [ 0 comment(s) ]

Today we'll have a look at an offering from Gigabyte, namely the 890GPA-UD3H. The AMD 890GX based motherboard is positioning itself in a somewhat more niche category with great better looks, better features and better quality components. When you plant the two chips from AMD on a mainboard from Gigabyte, they'll try to do some more stuff. With a bucket load of features like integrated graphics, sub-D, DVI, HDMI and display port connectors, passive cooling, 8-channel sound, Giga Ethernet, Crossfire ready, pretty decent overclockabilty and USB 3.0.

ECS H57H-MUS motherboard review

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 04/11/2010 01:00 PM [ 0 comment(s) ]

The H57 series offers a little more in the form of RAID support while it also packs a little more punch which we'll look at in this review of course. A more interesting feature on the H57H-MUS we'll be testing today is that it's packaged with two extra add-on controllers, one offers USB 3.0 through an onboard NEC uPD720200 host controller and the other is a SATA 6G add-on controller, adding some greater compatibility and extra power for USB / SATA6G devices. Follow us through the mystic images of the PCB, and of course a nice performance overview in our ECS H57H-MUS motherboard review.

ECS H55H-I Mini ITX motherboard review

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 04/01/2010 01:00 PM [ 0 comment(s) ]

We test the ECS H55H-I. It's been topic amongst many of the male versus female species for decades now and here at Guru3D today we will bring you the definitive answer to the eternal question ... does size matter ?! Pop on a Clarkdale based processor like the Core i3 or Core i5 series and you can use it's HDMI, DVI of DSUB graphics connector. Audio ? No worries the embedded Realtek ACL 8982 eight channel audio codec will happily output to analog or coaxial or optical TOSLINK S/PDIF connectors, need USB ? Well, the rear panel has six of them, need SATA2 ? Here we spot four ports and one eSATA, dual channel memory ? Yep supported, up-to 1600 MHz and in the end if you do not want to use the embedded graphics from the processor, then you can even pop in a full x16 PCIe graphics card and make a wicked gaming rig out of this very handy H55H-I motherboard.

ECS A890GXM-A review

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 03/16/2010 02:00 PM [ 0 comment(s) ]

We test the ECS A890GXM-A. AMD's new 890GX chipset is merely out for what, two weeks ? This already will be the third AMD 890 based motherboard review. This time around from the good folks at ECS. The AMD 890GX based motherboard chipsets proof their strength and by all means is really fun to work and play around with. When you plant the two chips from AMD on a mainboard from ECS, they'll try to do some more stuff. It's the ECS Black series style - with a bucket load of features like integrated graphics sub-D, DVI, HDMI and display port connectors, passive cooling, 8-channel sound, dual GigE Ethernet, Crossfire ready ... and pretty decent overclockabilty.

USB 3.0 performance explored

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 03/09/2010 02:00 PM [ 0 comment(s) ]

Typically with USB 2.0 you'd limit yourself to roughly 30MB/sec so it will be very interesting to see what MSI's latest USB 3.0 Star add-on controllers have in store and what kind of performance they bring to the table opposed to that old interface. Therefore we test USB 3.0 with the USB 3.0 ready N002 SSD, this device is able to deliver up to very fast 200 MB/s and 170 MB/s sequential read/write performance. But how will it perform on USB 3.0 ?

ASUS M4A89GTD USB 3 review

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 03/08/2010 02:00 PM [ 0 comment(s) ]

We merely released our first AMD890GX motherboard review a couple of days ago, and the new chipset is well received. But of course there are many more ODMs out there that have been preparing a new board based on the 890GX chipset from AMD. Today we'll have a look at an offering from ASUS, namely the M4A89GTD Pro USB3. A motherboard carrying that new SATA6G controller and sure ASUS dropped a USB 3.0 controller onto this model as well.

ASUS Maximus III Extreme review

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 02/23/2010 02:00 PM [ 0 comment(s) ]

We test the ASUS Maximus III Extreme. ASUS added a new P55 motherboard in the Republic of Gamers series motherboards, yes the Maximus III Extreme has arrived in our labs. The Maximus III Extreme is what I feel is one of the best tweaker / gamer P55 motherboards currently available in the market. Maximus III extreme will endear itself to PC enthusiasts and gamers. It supports a maximum of 16GB DDR3 memory, and has a stunning five PCIe (x16) slots: which supports single, dual, triple, and quad graphics card configurations, and supports both nVidia’s SLI and ATI’s Crossfire for the same. To get it some additional PCIe bandwidth we spot an NF200 bridge chip. It also supports USB 3.0, SATA 6G, and on-board 10-channel audio. Oh and did I mention you can overclock through Bluetooth on your Smartphone already ?

Gigabyte GA-H57M-USB3 motherboard review

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 02/07/2010 02:00 PM [ 0 comment(s) ]

In the wake of the Intel Clarkdale series of processors (Core i3 500 & Core i5 600 series) we have seen a lot of H55 chipset based motherboards out there. H55 is a chipset for your average mainstream entry level motherboards series, there is in fact a small step up .. it's based on the H57 chipset and will bring some more features to the table. Gigabyte was one of the first out there to ship out one of their H57 based motherboards. The Gigabyte H57 series offers a little more in the form of RAID support while it also packs a little more punch which we'll look at in this review of course. A more interesting feature on this GA-H57M-USB3 motherboard is that it also contains USB 3.0 through an onboard NEC uPD720200 host controller and very excessive display connection options like DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort.
