Benchmarking StarCraft II - 2560x1600

For our final test resolution we really put strain on the GPUS and see GPU limitation, finally ! We continuously say it, but 60 FPS should be your target. With all eye-candy (in-game) enabled we see the GTX 460 being the better card here. Also impressive for the money I find the Radeon HD 5770, at 47 FPS this card offers tremendous value for money.

Ay 2560x1600, all eye-candy enabled and then 4xAA things tend to get a little more difficult. Up-to the GTX 260 you will completely jump into framebuffer limitation and the lack of raw rendering performance. Even the GTX 285 (all cards in our tests today are verified to be clocked at reference speeds by the way) has a hard time, and yes .. I hate to mention it again, the GTX 460768Mb caves in due to memory limitation, but that 229 USD 1024MB GeForce GTX 460 here is the clear winner.

But if you game at 2560x1600 we assume you have some thirst for something even more powerful like a GTX 470 or 480.

Final words

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty seems to be a huge title with a lot of potential. We loved playing the beta and can't wait for the final product.

We do wish it would have used a next-gen DX11 engine and some more eye-candy, but none the less it still is a very attractive game to observe alright. Performance wise if you stick to 0xAA then any reasonable graphics card will do just fine. Value for money wise if you are in the market right now then you should hunt down a Radeon HD 5770, 5830 or GeForce GTX 460 768 / 1024MB. We hope that ATI will update their drivers soon so that AA can be tested on their end as well. That's it for this article, it was a bit of a rush job so forgive me as it could have used a little more wording here and there.

Remember, the results as seen today are based on the the non-final product and are measured with FRAPS. Please look at the numbers as a strong indicator, and not precise measurements.
