Heatsink Installation

Firstly, this cooler is huge compared to most heatsinks, but it's not as heavy as someone might think. It is around 800 grams. For a reference, the Zalman flower like heatsink (full copper) with the 120mm fan is actually a bit heavier than the Ninja.

Here is the first complaint someone might have. It's not really a big deal but the fan is being held onto the heatsink by the use of 2 wires that you put on the fan, and then use those to mount the fan on the fins. The fins have openings that you put the wire into. The fan is only being held by the fins, and if I mounted it correctly, only the bottom and the top fin. (Tried to mount it a couple of times.)

Some people (most users actually, with a mid-tower case) might have a problem with the size. In my case, it was impossible to use the heatsink with the fan assembled on the heatsink. The only way to use the fan was to take my RAM modules out (I would have a different problem in that case !)

To install the heatsink on the motherboard, you will first need to take the current backplate off because the heatsink has its own backplate assembly. Then you will need to check out what your system's socket is. The heatsink is compatible with Socket 754/939/940 from AMD, and Socket 478 and LGA 775 from Intel. You then need to use the plastic guide that is designed for your socket. Screw the guide, (no pun intended, you dirty minded you...) on the motherboard. Motherboard back into place inside the case, mount the heatsink, put the cards back in, and boot up.

The front bracket and backplate are easily removed by removing two screws on this Socket 754 mainboard.

Another problem that might frighten the non-enthusiast users, or at least those that haven't tried a heatsink installation before, is the force required for the heatsink to be secured to the motherboard.

At least with the AMD mounting kit I've used, it required some effort and that might be a slight problem if you are trying to install the heatsink with the motherboard inside a cramped case.
