Tom Clancy's HAWX

We don't see many air combat games on the market these days and I sincerely don't know how many of you are still into classic flight sims. The famed Ace Combat series was nice. I did play the latest installment, Ace Combat 6, and I must say it has all the essentials of a decent arcadish-flavored flight game.

With HAWX we enter a new level. There are well over 50 planes in the game, each of which carries a destructive payload. You'll need it, as you'll engage multiple hostiles across a war-torn but still gorgeous looking terrain. However, you won't be alone, and you'll have the option of issuing orders to your squad mates, just like we are used to in the Ghost Recon series.

Visually, the game's impressive, especially when flying in close to cities, which really shows off the building details. But it's when the game pulls into the third-person perspective while you dog-fight that the game flaunts its visuals and you really see much of the environment. The genre of air combat games could finally see decent revival with Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X., and we like that... very much actually.

Tom Clancy's HAWX amazes me when it comes to originality, but more importantly... graphics wise it's quite a lovely game. For this game we selected the following image quality (IQ) settings. We locked our image quality settings to 4x AA, for ATI graphics cards we enable DX10.1 mode.

  • 4x AA
  • 16x AF
  • ALL settings @ HIGH
  • All candy like HDR, DOF etc ON
  • DirectX 10/10.1 mode + Ambient occlusion, sun shafts and shadows at HIGH

Again wow .. it's not that you'd need 142 FPS on average in 2560x1600 but that certainly makes any hardware freak at least a little horny.

 

Resident Evil 5 (DirectX 10)

A new addition to our benchmark suite is Resident Evil 5. Capcom's newly released game ensures you a survival horror sequel that will let you bust up some zombies on your hard drive. Resident Evil 5 PC will support DirectX 9 and 10 along with ultra-high resolutions.

RE5 we test at DirectX 10.0 mode with 4x AA -- all settings are maxed out including BLUR activated. Now we already noticed very promising numbers for the 5970 itself -- however (and not a real surprise) 5970 crossfire definitely kicks in, but yes yes .. we are running into CPU limitation -- hence the flat line.

 

3DMark Vantage (DirectX 10)

3DMark Vantage focuses on the two areas most critical to gaming performance: the CPU and the GPU. With the emergence of multi-package and multi-core configurations on both the CPU and GPU side, the performance scale of these areas has widened, and the visual and game-play effects made possible by these configurations are accordingly wide-ranging. This makes covering the entire spectrum of 3D gaming a difficult task. 3DMark Vantage solves this problem in three ways:

1. Isolate GPU and CPU performance benchmarking into separate tests,
2. Cover several visual and game-play effects and techniques in four different tests, and
3. Introduce visual quality presets to scale the graphics test load up through the highest-end hardware.

To this end, 3DMark Vantage has two GPU tests, each with a different emphasis on various visual techniques, and two CPU tests, which cover the two most common CPU-side tasks: Physics Simulation and AI. It also has four visual quality presets (Entry, Performance, High, and Extreme) available in the Advanced and Professional versions, which increase the graphics load successively for even more visual quality. Each preset will produce a separate, official 3DMark Score, tagged with the preset in question.

The graphics load increases significantly from the lowest to the highest preset. The Performance preset is targeted for mid-range hardware with 256 MB of graphics memory. The Entry preset is targeted for integrated and low-end hardware with 128 MB of graphics memory. The higher presets require 512 MB of graphics memory, and are targeted for high-end and multi-GPU systems.

With 3DMark Vantage we look at the three main results it returns in the "P" performance test. Staggering numbers really. A lot can be said about the 3DMark series, yet the GPU test really is good and reproduces a very reliable number that scales pretty darn well and trustworthy.

Expect a GPU score of 21500+ points, and depending on your system specifications roughly 22000 points for the overall P score if you are on a Core i7 platform with a single 5970.

But in Crossfire we got a P score back of ~30000 and then 32388 on purely the GPU -- that is .. substantial alright.
