Performance Testing

So we'll go through our software benchmark suite. We'll test the Radeon RX 480 at the usual resolutions and settings. I am not going to explain all quality settings, again these are similar to our reviews. Overall as such they are the highest quality settings with some sort of AA enabled.

Last but not least I included Ultra HD results just for the simple reason that if I would not include them, somebody would ask me why. The RX 480 is not intended for this resolution. However lower your image quality settings enough and things COULD get playable, the 8GB version certainly has the VRAM for it.

3DMark Time Spy then, released in 2016 this is a D3D12 title, ASYNC is enabled. You'll notice gradual performance increases once the driver advances to newer builds. Looking at the initial 16.6.2 driver and today's ReLive driver, that is a 124 point increase on the overall score which again is the famous 2~3% percent.

Concluding

Crimson ReLive offers many new features, it is faster and more responsive and is a greatly improved AMD driver. Performance wise do not expect miracles. It looks like most optimizations for a handful of newer titles have been inserted into Crimson ReLive. As such Crimson will only offer minor performance increments. If you look at the absolute average FPS we can measure at best roughly 2% maybe 3% performance increases on very optimized titles. But it's another good step upwards.

So why have you seen massive perf gains / drops over time if the 0-day drivers do not add huge performance increases ? Well that is simple, often the most performance increase are based on the actual game being patched and updated. The 0-day Crimson driver seem to focus mainly at very small perf increases, but mostly compatibility / fixes and adding multi-GPU support. The bigger perf increases themselves seem to originate from new game patches. Overall Crimson ReLive is a terrific driver features wise with the new DVR and everything. Performance wise we see very little gains, but every frame here and there is one right?

Cheers,
