NVIDIA Quad SLI reviewed

The Quad SLI Do-It-Yourself experience

Only a month or two ago we took a peek at the NVIDIA's GeForce 7950 GX2 where we tried to enable Quad SLI with the help of two GeForce 7950 GX2 graphics cards. At that time the results were quite a catastrophe and I halted that "mini" review within one page as there was only one game really supported. Not exactly NVIDIA's fault, we just where curious. Back then I stated that I very much doubted if NVIDIA would get Quad SLI running... ever.

Well okay so that was a little presumptuous. Obviously one thing was a fact, NVIDIA is and was selling Quad SLI based system through system resellers so there had to be some sort of support eventually.

Merely eight weeks later NVIDIA recently released a ForceWare 91.37 driver to the public opening up Quad SLI compatibility not only to these pre-built Quad SLI rigs but also for the do-it yourselfers among us, thus offering you the option to build and try out Quad SLI. Quite a challenge I figured but hey, I'm not saying it's there just yet but there has been some tremendous progress that we just have to write a little something about.

NVIDIA is saying "okay we are doing Quad SLI for those that want to play games at a 2560x1600 resolution with the slickest AA and AF modes activated". And that's true, the new drivers prove that in that teeny weeny segment of the market Quad SLI is starting to make some good progress and can actually make a difference.

So we flew in a Dell 30" high-resolution LCD screen that can take that resolution of 2560x1600, got ourselves some serious gaming gear, components and started again building a Quad SLI system to see if progress has been made.

What we'll do today is simple, I'll briefly guide you as to what you need to think about when you are buying Quad SLI (components), then I'll tell you a little about the installation, followed by a couple tests we ran, the experience of HR gaming and we'll close all that with a conclusion.

But first off for those that do not know, what is SLI and particularly... Quad SLI?
