Performance - Games: Removing the GPU Bottleneck

Performance - Games: Removing the GPU Bottleneck

A PC is a symbiosis of components. There are always bottlenecks somewhere. For a gaming PC the biggest bottleneck actually is your graphics card, the CPU matters way less for gaming opposed to the GPU. We opt to test with a GeForce GTX 1080 as it is bottlenecked in 2560x1440, but at 1920x1080 not so much. We also test with game quality settings that you guys use yourselves while gaming in order to reproduce a result set that is at the very same level you would see at home on your own PC. We feel that this card is well-balanced for today's games combined with the better image quality settings as well as being a card that people can actually afford.

There has been a good amount of discussion in our forums as to what would happen with game performance if you remove the GPU bottleneck and then see what effect the CPU has and thus the CPU becomes the bottleneck. You can achieve that in many ways. User VERY old high-FPS games, lower image quality or simply drop down in resolution.  The numbers you see below are three game tests being run at a resolution of 1280x720. The idea here is to see what would happen there wasn't a graphics card bottleneck.

This is a new set of results, over time more will be added to get a better overview.

This page purely exists based upon forum feedback for a small group of people, we do not feel that 720p testing is representable for your gaming experience whatsoever, neither do people game at 720p. Please do check up the benchmarks at 1920x1080 and 2560x1440 in this review for a more fair, objective and relevant overview, as remember a GPU is always your biggest bottleneck even five years from now as games get graphically more demanding with graphics cards evolving.
