9. What's the best part of your rig?

The best part of this build just has to be the mods. From the LED panels to the huge window, the silver case badges to the front-mounted SSD, the white painted Hue+ units and the painted GPU support, the cable management and all the little extra holes I had to drill. The mods help turn this ordinary PC into something I could be proud of. Everything I did in this build from the mods, to the white theme, to the LED's was designed so I could admire my rig as it sat on my desk. Too many people spend hundreds or thousands of dollars only to stick their PC under their desk, never to be seen again.

10. Any dislikes, things you should not have bought?

I do have a couple regrets though. I wish I had ordered longer PSU cables. They work fine, but I wanted to do a better job with cable management. The length of the cables being almost too short prevented me from routing them as cleanly as I would have liked. I also wish I would have changed the silver in the cables to graphite. If you look closely enough, the silver wires look like a dirty white instead of silver. Graphite would be been a true grey color and would have matched better I think.

11. Did you modify anything ?  cases/video cards/other? Did you do it yourself? Walk us through it.

I spent a lot of time planning and dreaming of ways I could make this build my own. I wanted to do things that I hadn't seen in other builds. Here is the list of mods that I have in my build:

  • NZXT cutout panel (Front)
  • Added fabric covers
  • H440 cutout panel (Top)
  • Added fabric covers
  • Large window cutout
  • Added foam, case badges, and SSD to the HDD panel
  • J-Channel added behind motherboard to conceal cables
  • Painted (2) NZXT Hue+ white
  • Painted MNPCTech GPU support white
  • Drained Swiftech H220 X2 Prestige and refilled with Mayhems Pastel Extreme White
  • Various added holes and cutouts for LED and cable routing

Only 3 of the mods were not done by me. The two panel cutouts and the giant side window were done by a modder friend of mine. He had all the tools (like the CNC machine) that I dont. Everything else on the list was done by myself in my apartment.

13. Do you have any future updates planned ?

I am looking forward to upgrading my GPU to either the GTX 1080, or perhaps waiting until the GTX 1180(equivalent). I am also considering adding a fully-custom CPU loop.

14. Does your rig or mod have a name ?

My PC has had three names since it was built. The original name was "Hi Lo Silver!", which was a play on words based on the Lone Ranger's famous saying and referenced the three  main colors of my theme. Lacking interest, it was changed to "White Party". The White Party name came from club parties that I used to attend where everyone wore white clothes and danced under multicolored club lights. Unfortunately, the meaning was lost on readers and they saw the name as a racist term. I changed the name to its current name, which is "Rainbow White", based on the Rainbow Brite cartoon.

This experience was so much more rewarding than I could have imagined. It took lots of patience and perseverance and I will never forget how much fun it was. The first time you see that blue screen (BSOD) when there's an error is terrifying, but the pride in knowing you fixed the problem is worth the trouble. I can honestly say I am addicted to PC building after just one try, and I imagine I will have many more builds on the horizon in the coming years. Thank you for taking the time to read the story of my first PC build, and if you haven't built one yourself, now is the perfect time to get started!
