DX11: Far Cry 3 - Anno 2070

Before we begin mind you the results you see differ a tiny bit from the reference baseline review as these tests have been performed on a X79 / Core i7 3960X processor (six-cores) all overclocked to 4.6 GHz. There's no downclocking on long duration CPU load, what you see is what you get.

With that said, let's see how Far Cry 3 behaves with the above platform and a nice GPU overclock in the 1100~1176 MHz ranges.

DX11: Far Cry 3

Shoot first, ask questions later. In Far Cry 3, players step into the shoes of Jason Brody, a man alone at the edge of the world, stranded on a mysterious tropical island —  players will slash, sneak and shoot their way across the island in a world that has lost all sense of morality. As Jason Brody, you'll notice that the visual quality of the game is pretty darn good, but very heavy on the GPU alright.

System requirements will vary greatly depending the graphics settings, but a modest PC will be required to run the game at medium settings or better. Far Cry is built on the Dunia game engine, similar to the prequels but it certainly has been updated and is DirectX 11 compatible.

Far Cry 3 basically has four quality modes: LOW, MEDIUM, HIGH and ULTRA. Next to that you'll have settings and preferences you can choose from. The game however is VERY taxing on the GPU at times game at even HIGH quality settings. Our settings:

  • Very High-quality DX11 mode
  • 2x MSAA (Anti-aliasing)
  • 16x AF (Anisotropic Filtering).
That is not bad, roughly 10% extra in the more common resolutions.

DX11: Anno 2070

It's 2070 and the world has changed. The sea's rising level has harmed the coastal cities and climate change has made large stretches of land inhospitable. In Anno 2070 the game offers a new world full of challenges, where you will need to master resources, diplomacy and trade in the most comprehensive economic management system seen yet in the Anno series.

This particular test has the following enabled:

  • DX11
  • Very high Quality mode
  • in-game AA enabled
  • in-game AF enabled

Our scores are average frame-rates so you need to take a margin in mind for lower FPS at all times. As such we say 40 FPS for this game should be your minimum, while 60 FPS (frames per second) can be considered optimal.

Anno 2070 is hitting a CPU bottleneck really, as such only at 2560x1600 we start to se a nice gain in performance.
