VGA performance Recording Level and IQ settings

Graphics (VGA) performance Recording Level and IQ settings

Before we begin with the graphics performance tests a little explanation. We use a time based measurement based upon framerate recording. The test is a representative yet stringent on the GPU. Our settings:

For all our graphics performance tests we apply the Quality settigns as discussed at 2xMSAA with all graphics quality settings set at Ultra. We confirmed that DX11 is activated. However, some mid-range card will struggle hard at these settings.

This is the scene recording we use for our benchmarks.

So if that happens to youm simply disable MSAA and you should be fairly fine, but we'll show you that over the next few pages. The graphics cards used for this article are:

  •  Radeon HD 7990
  •  Radeon R9 290X
  •  Radeon R9 280X
  •  Radeon R9 270X
  •  Radeon R9 260X
  •  Radeon HD 7970 GHz
  •  Radeon HD 7970
  •  Radeon HD 7950
  •  Radeon HD 7870
  •  Radeon HD 7850
  •  Radeon HD 7790
  •  Radeon HD 6970
  •  Radeon HD 6950
  •  Radeon HD 6870
  •  Radeon HD 6850
  •  GeForce GTX Titan
  •  GeForce GTX 780
  •  GeForce GTX 770
  •  GeForce GTX 760
  •  GeForce GTX 690
  •  GeForce GTX 680
  •  GeForce GTX 670
  •  GeForce GTX 660
  •  GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost
  •  GeForce GTX 580
  •  GeForce GTX 570
  •  GeForce GTX 560 Ti

Our test system is based on a power hungry six-core Intel Core i7-3960X Extreme Edition Sandy Bridge-E based setup on the X79 chipset platform. This setup is overclocked to 4.60 GHz on all cores. Next to that we have energy saving functions disabled for this motherboard and processor (to ensure consistent benchmark results). We use Windows 7 64-bit SP1 all patched up. Each card runs on the same PC with the same operating system clone.

  • GeForce cards use the latest 331.65 WHQL Beta driver (download here).
  • AMD Radeon graphics cards we used the latest 13.11 Beta build 8 driver (download here).

Crap, I get that yoda sense that the helicopter just fired something pretty bad at us !

Let's head onwards to the next page where we'll look at the Full HD monitor resolution performance first.
