Conclusion

Overall, the ASUS ROG ORION PRO performed very well with games, videos, and music.  I expected a little bit better sound quality from them, especially since the ROG Vulcan were mighty good.  But I wasn’t let down.  I would probably get the Orion Pro over the Corsair Vengeance 1500, even though I like Corsair’s earcups better.

Compared to other headsets like the Corsair Vengeance, the Orion Pro is a notch above in sound quality, but a notch below in ergonomics.  After a long session of gaming, 2 to 3 hours continuously, my ears did feel like they were sweating.  Using cloth or velour material on the earcups would let the moisture out a little bit better.  Other than that, the Orion Pro were very comfortable.  The headband never felt like it was crushing my head, and in fact, they are very light and easy to forget they are even on your head.

Sound quality was a mixed bag.  The quality of the included Spitfire USB audio interface left a lot to be desired.  The sound was very powerful, but it was also a little crude, and ultimately took away from immersion in games and videos.  Switching to the regular outputs on my motherboard (Realtek ALC898) the Orion Pro had better depth and clarity.  With a dedicated headphone amp, an Audio-gd Sparrow ‘A’, the Orion Pro only just got better.  Sound character is very crisp, voices come out clear, with just a little bit of grainy sound.  Bass, however, is very good, and gives it good bass, deep, and plentiful.

One thing the Orion is not is cheap.  It’s not even inexpensive, it’s a premium product, and in typical Asus fashion, it is serious.  For the price, I think they are a pretty good deal.  I like a company that shows that they are passionate about making good products, and ASUS have proven that they can make world class headphones with the Orion Pro.

Verdict: Highly Recommended

Special thanks to Hilbert and ASUS for making this review happen.
