The board has one 8-pin power feed for the processor located just behind the rear IO panel. The Maximus VI Hero is made in the form factor ATX (30.5x24.4cm) the Z87 mobo has four slots for DDR3 memory which you can occupy with up to 32GB of DDR3 DRAM DIMMs. The four DIMM slots have support for dual-channel 1066/1333/1600*/1866*/2000*/2133*(OC), 2200*/2400*/2600*/2667*/2800* with the asterisk marking "when overclocked".

All of the SATA ports support 6GBps capability, there's no need to creep and fiddle around to make sure you have the right ports for that shiny new Solid State Drive. Here are the all red SATA ports -- ASUS is equipping the board with twin SATA ports. Six of them come from the Intel PCH and the rest are provided by ASMedia 1061 controllers. For SSDs stick to the Intel controller please which is a good chunk faster.

Here you can see the PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slots, here's how they will divide:

  • Once card x16
  • Two cards at x8/x8
  • Triple cards at x8/x8/x4
Additionally, for those people who want the ultimate gaming performance, the motherboard supports up-to 2-way SLI and CrossfireX configurations.

The Maximus VI Hero Z87 is a regular sized ATX. The mobo comes with 10k Black Metallic capacitors, offer a longer lifespan with 10k hours at 105C, and 20% better low temperature endurance - specifically selected for extreme cooling scenarios. The overall choice on components is the best of the best really.
