The board has one 8-pin and another 4-pin power feed for the processor located on just behind the rear IO panel, but the Maximus VI Extreme features an on-board 6-pin PCI-E connector as well, to able to supply additional voltage to the graphics cards. Made in the form factor ATX (30.5x24.4cm) the Z87 mobo has four slots for DDR3 memory which you can occupy with up to 32GB of DDR3 DRAM DIMMs. The four DIMM slots have support for dual-channel 1066/1333/1600*/1866*/2000*/2133*(OC), 2200*/2400*/2600*/2667*/2800* with the asterix marking "when overclocked".

So yeah, all of the SATA ports support 6GBps capability, there's no need to creep and fiddling around to make sure you have the right ports for that shiny new Solid State Drive. Additionally, for those people who want the ultimate gaming performance, the motherboard supports up-to 4-way SLI and CrossfireX configurations.

Here are the all red SATA ports -- ASUS is equipping the board with twin SATA ports. Six of them come from the Intel PCH and the rest are provided by ASMedia 1061 controllers. For SSDs stick to the Intel controller please which is a good chunk faster.

Here you can see the PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slots, here's how they will divide:

  • Once card x16
  • Two cards at x8/x8
  • Triple cards at x8/x16/x8
  • Four cards at x8/x16/x8/x8
  • A fifth card would run at x4 (black slot)
