Meet The Ryzen Processor Series

The Ryzen Processor Family

AMD made the rather sensible decision to re-name Zen to something similar sounding. Yes, the Zen and thus Summit Ridge product series has officially been named 'AMD Ryzen', kind of extrapolated from 'risen' I guess. We look at the Series 5 1600 processor, let us peek at the specifications below to see what they are pitted against.

You have seen the reviews, compared to Intel Core i5 and i7 the Ryzen processors are multi-threading beasts and pretty darn fast alright. Ryzen has launched with three primary 8-core models. Today you see the introduction of multiple six and four-core models. As time passes there will be three tiers with the Ryzen 3, 5 and 7 denominators comparable to Core i3, i5 and i7 for the Intel product range. Let me reiterate and make clear that ALL Ryzen processor are unlocked, that entails all Ryzen 3, 5 and 7 processors. The motherboards need a chipset that is unlocked as well though, but the B350 (mainstream) and X370 (high-end) series are covering all of that. The newest four new processor SKUs:

AMD Ryzen 5 1600X- 249 USD

AMD Ryzen 5 1600X is the flagship six-core processor and it has 6 cores with 12 threads, in fact all Ryzen processors have this core/thread ratio. The processor will get an impressive boost frequency of 4.00 GHz, the base-clock is 3.6 GHz base clock. Depending on your choice of cooling, XFR will kick in and bring it to 4.1 GHz and we have even seen 4.2 on an air-cooler on a single thread (XFR - Extended Frequency Range). The X in the Ryzen 5 1600X refers to a better yielded processor (could tweak better), a higher base and boost frequency and yeah, simply is a binned processor (thus tested and selected from good to great). This processor has a terrifically rated 95 Watt TDP. The price for this 6-core Ryzen R5 1600X processor is 249 USD/Euro. This is an unlocked (multiplier) processor, in fact all Ryzen processors are unlocked and all 6-core parts are set up in a 3+3 processor configuration.

AMD Ryzen 5 1600 - 219 USD

The next AMD Ryzen in line would be the Ryzen 5 1600, this dawg once again gets 6 cores and 12 threads but this time the turbo and base clock sit 400 MHz lower compared to the 1600X. That means a turbo frequency of 3.60 GHz. This is pretty much the same processor, just with a lower base at 3.2 GHz and Turbo frequency and yes, a lower price as you just shaved off 30 bucks.

AMD Ryzen 7 1500X - 189 USD

The Ryzen 5 1500X is (for now) the fastest clocked quad-core model, it is set up as 2+2 cores spread over the two CCXes. It could be a terrific processor at a price of just 189 USD. Here you'll receive a 4-core, 8 thread processor. This time at a Turbo frequency of 3.70 GHz and a base clock frequency set at 3.5 GHz. That lower clock helps you with your energy consumption as a very notable attribute is that this processor is rated at a 65W TDP whereas most of the others would be 95 Watt parts.

AMD Ryzen 7 1400 - 169 USD

The Ryzen 5 1400 is (for now) the slower clocked quad-core model, it is set up as 2+2 cores spread over the two CCXes. It could be a value processor at a nice price of just 168 USD. Here you'll receive a 4-core and 8 thread processor. This time at a Turbo frequency of 3.20 GHz and a base clock frequency set at 3.4 GHz. That lower clock helps you with your energy consumption as a very notable attribute is that this processor is rated at a 65W TDP whereas most of the others would be 95 Watt parts. It is, however, unlocked, and tweaked this processor could bring a lot of value.

The above four processors are thus the second wave in the Ryzen launch. All these processors will fit Socket AM4 and thus you can use the same motherboard. Some models will be bundled with a Wraith 95W cooler. We’d recommend you to look at a nice LCS kit or some sort of cooling from Noctua, as a little extra cooling performance can do magic to your boost frequency and tweaking experience.

In the above table you can see the launch SKUs as well as an overview of what to expect in the coming months processor wise, it is going to be a busy year with AMD processor reviews alright as chatter on the street is that AMD will also introduce enthusiast class processors with up-to 16 cores / 32-threads enabled! You will have noticed that some models end with an X, while others do not. It remains simple, the X models are a little more special in the sense that they will have a higher base and boost clock frequency as well as an increased XFR range. We'll talk a little more about XFR (Extended Frequency Range) on the next page but basically look at it as a bit of an extra on top of the boost. Also, all X model processors are binned. This means that the processors are tested on ASIC quality and then sorted from good to better and often will clock higher on the XFR range and yes, X models could be / should be more easy to tweak as well.
