World in Conflict (PC) performance review

By: Hilbert Hagedoorn Edited by Dave | Published: September 22, 2007

World in Conflict performance

We took ten graphics cards of which the majority is DX10 class. We also added a couple of DX9 class graphics card. Now we test at both medium and very high image quality settings as we believe you guys will pick one of these two detail levels.

In "very high" image quality (IQ) mode we enabled the DX10 rendering path with the DX10 compatible cards. The DX9 cards can also be tested in "Very high" IQ mode, yet are forced over the DX9 code path (obviously). This mode also has 4xAA and 4xAF enabled for all graphics cards opposed to the medium IQ setting where AA has been disabled.

We measured 10 graphics adapters, x2 IQ modes, x3 resolutions (1280x1024, 1600x1200 & 2560x1600). Considering that for each graphics adapter we'd need to install and setup the drivers over and over again you can imaging this was a very time consuming process with the 60 benchmark runs we took.

Watch and observe, Medium IQ results first:

World in Conflict - Medium image quality 1280x1024

So here we are at 1280x1024. As you can see the majority of card seems to be able to keep up with this setting.

World in Conflict - Medium image quality 1600x1200

At 1600x1200 things already change and shift towards the upper class of mid-range and more expensive graphics cards. Look at that HD Radeon 2900 XT go by the way. A warning here about the 2900 XT though (before you get too excited) there's a bug in the 7.9 Cats drivers we used and we noticed poorer Texture Quality in certain situations.

World in Conflict - Medium image quality 2560x1600

At the mother of all resolutions we really need a high end graphics card though. Let's move onward to the next page where we'll open up Pandora's box with the image quality settings set to high.
