Windy 6 FireWire audio interface review

By: Steven ROBSCIX Wall | Edited by Hilbert Hagedoorn | Published: June 18, 2009

Final words and verdict

The Windy 6 Firewire interface offers many tools for the home studio artist or mixer. Considering the card has 6 output and 6 inputs with Pre-amps and gain controls on two, phantom power Neutrik connectors, balanced output, Coax digital and dual channel inserts the Windy 6 is very versatile and inexpensive audio interface.

The audio I/O would easily allow you to record many different instruments or player/instrument groupings.

The internal microphone preamps were quite clean using the test Studio mic offering slight noise and hiss only on the highest gain ranges. They were fairly transparent and offered good sound quality but don't quite compete with higher dollar external preamps or other preamps we had on hand, which was expected. The Preamps will give you clean vocal tracks though that you can edit and work with and that is all you need at this price point.

Infrasonic packed a great deal of features and audio muscle into this compact interface and all for a great price. We had a great time recording tracks and working with the interface, all features were simple to find and easy to use.

We could still ask for a few more features, such as dual Headphone outputs and always more I/O but this is an exceptional interface for those getting started in the PC studio experience or those veterans that require a road interface or a few extra inputs from an auxiliary interface.

Building audio products of this quality, we can easily see -and hear why Infrasonic is so highly regarded overseas and we would wager their name will quickly become one of the top North American audio suppliers for recording hardware very soon.

This is a tough interface as we dropped it off the table a few times during review from yanking cables, normal studio blunders and all was well. Considering most consumer soundcards are hitting the $200 price tag for the newest models. The price for the Windy 6 is quite low with all features, expandability and sound quality considered.
If you're starting a new project studio or need a handy versatile road interface, consider putting the Infrasonic Windy 6 high on your shopping list.

Last Minute addition:
Infrasonic has announced they will be offering a black version of the Windy 6 interface for those who prefer that color. Actually it looks rather slick.
