Final Words & Conclusion
The Silicon power M10 series Solid State drives are a bit peculiar to position. We already tried really hard to explain to you guys in the beginning of this article that this product is not intended to be positioned in the high-end market. And after looking into it's performance, well that assumption definitely became validated. The performance of the M10 is average at best in comparison to a high-end SSD. So don't think about using it as a primary drive on your PC or laptop on which you install an OS.
On the flipside of the coin, this SSD was designed to be portable storage, hence the USB connector, and for an external device it's really handy and really fast compared to all other external storage out there. It's a perfect device to share your music, documents, presentations and movies. I mean you get to have pretty decent write speeds, and read speeds are really really fast enough for external storage. The big plus is of course it really is easy and lightweight to carry around, but so is a high volume USB flash stick. So again .. that makes the M10 is a little difficult to position in the onslaught of the fierce and competitive SSD and flash storage arena right now.
So while the M10 might not be among the fastest SSD drives out there, it is an easy to use and setup device that weighs just over 70 grams. It's great external storage with good looks as well. But for this product to succeed .. the price will need to be very aggressive, as that what the SSD market is and demands right now.
Is this a viable SSD for in our PC then you might ask ? Well, yes and no. It's not fast enough and lacking cache memory to be able to handle an operating system like Windows Vista. However, as a secondary drive you can install it quite easily. Then say if you install and run your games from the SSD, the read speeds will match or be faster than a WD VelociRaptor, writing performance however will be slower than such a drive.
And that's my recommendation right there. You need to understand at what market segment the product is aimed at. You can really enjoy the M10 as secondary drive, just not primary. It's designed to be used a portable carry around storage, and functions as such really well. Yes, in that segment the product can position itself really good. But everything else in the market is for cache based Samsung and Indilinx based SSD drives which will offer much better overall performance.
Currently the M10 will sell for give or take 199 USD (64GB), which makes it more expensive as a similar sized USB flash disk. It's all about preferences really but if it fits your needs then we will surely recommend it.
