 Reader's Rigs -2K-Darkness - Deep Blue

By: Dave Crewe | Edited by  | Published: July 18, 2003

First one up to bat is 2K-Darkness with Deep Blue. He’s been a member of our forums for about a year now. And he has managed a total of 2 posts in that time hahaha. He submitted through email and then got ahold of me through ICQ. We talked for awhile. He mostly uses his PC for playing the Desert Combat mod for Battlefield 1942, or getting his but whipped in Warcraft 3. When not turning the tables of who’s butt is kicked in Starcraft he likes do to some 3D Studio Max stuff on it.

Here’s what he has, an AthlonXP 1800+ with a tiny overclock at 1600Mhz, cooled by a temperature controlled Arctic Cooling Coppersilent. He’s running his 512 mb of Apacer PC2100 (256x2) at CAS2. Both are plugged into an Asus A7N8X v1.4 motherboard running the 1.04 BIOS. For gaming deeds he turned to a Sapphire Radeon 9500 softmodded into a 9700, it’s running on DNA 3.6 CATS *note the Zalman heat pipe, which only lets him get to 350/280. The lack of case fans might contribute to that too. Sound chores are ran with a Hercules Gamesuround Fortissimo 3 and piped to his AIWA stereo with 2 speakers. He’s got one of those Yamaha F-1 CD-RW’s with that T@too technology, the one that writes designs and stuff on the unused space of the CD. He said he only used it a few times when he 1st got it, and noticed that it was picky when he used cheap media. He’s got a Toshiba M1612 DVD-ROM in there too, which he uses to watch movies on his 17” Miro CRT monitor. Everything was bought locally (Germany) at wholesale prices.

“My Case is in Guru3d Blue”

There’s what everything’s stuffed into. Just a standard ATX case. Was beige, he painted it one shade of blue then ran out of paint, so he went and got more but a different shade by mistake. He painted over the 1st colour with the second. It’s got a HEC 350W low noise PSU in there, which he left our interview to go buy. See the little black button below the floppy? That’s a switch for his lights inside. No window yet though, he said that’s coming.

“…the cheapest way of noiseless HDD moddin…”

That there is his anti-harddrive noise solution. A rubber band wrapped around and suspending his IBM 80GB harddrive. Not a bad idea, I guess it could cut down on vibration noise.

So what’s in store for Deep Blue? Thinking of getting a 2400+ XP and some PC2700 in a couple months. And eventually having a 7.1 surround system for his soundcard. He’s eyeing up a Samsung 17” monitor too.

So tune in a couple weeks from now when we review Kyaner’s PC!
