Radeon HD 4870 X2 and Crossfire review

By: Hilbert Hagedoorn Edited by John A. Johnsen | Published: August 12, 2008

Photos - The Cards

On the next few pages we'll show you some photos. The images were taken at 4272 x 2848 pixels and then scaled down. The camera used was a Canon 450D - 12 MegaPixel.

ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2

We have the early engineering sample and a more recent version of the card at our disposal, and well ... the sticker is pretty much the difference.

Two GPUs, double memory configuration .. that's a lot of wires and components to mount into a PCB. As you can see, the card is long for sure. I measured it up and it's 27 CM in length. At the front we spot 2x DVI (dual-link thus two high-res monitors are supported) connectors. Obviously you'll receive a HDMI adapter as well which will be able to pass-trough 7.1 Channel lossless sound, too.

When we peek at it from the rear side we can see that length a tad better. It's quite a lot really. However don't get fooled, it's as long as NVIDIA's high-end cards, for example an GeForce GTX 280 is 27 CM in length as well.

Did you guys already notice something different? That's right ... a black PCB. Traditionally ATI always used a red colored PCB, which quite frankly doesn't fit the high-end products really well. High-end PCs are often pimped up a bit. I really like the black aesthetics here, and I think it's a very sexy look for the card. As you can see in some other photo's (look at top photo) most final versions will have a sticker on top of the cooler though. A bit of a shame really.

The R700 has a metal plate across the back of the card just like the 3870 X2. Quite interestingly, it also has RAM on the back..
