OCZ ModXstream 600 WattIf there is one thing there is no shortage on in the technology market, it has got to be power supplies. Everybody is selling them; quite frankly it's crazy how many models, brands, and options you'll stumble into. It's funny really, when you think about the fact that there's only a handful of manufacturers that actually makes power supplies, worldwide.

But heck, I love variety and the one thing that we do know for sure is that competition has always driven consumer market prices down. I think, roughly half way through last year the market got really saturated and for the first time in years that growing trend settled. it did drive PSU's to a very good quality level, and from there onwards, things can only get better (or cheaper).

Saturation of that market was too obviously the main reason, but there was another one .. ever since 2007/2008 there is much more awareness about power consumption. We all think it's great to see kilowatt power supplies, but fact remains ... you truly can't hope that you have a PC sucking up that wattage right? So while overall performance went up in the technology sector, we all of the sudden hear phrases like performance per watt, power saving features and much more. And the fact is that, for say 400 Watts power consumption, you get to a lot more then a PC did two years ago. So a certain invisible balance has been created as both consumers and industry figured .. enough is enough, the performance per watt challenge was created.

This is why 500-600 Watt power supplies are a pretty interesting product to have in the market. They offer enough Wattage for a modern PC. And this is where we make a stop at OCZ Technology today. They have launched a very energy efficient power supply that not only looks good, is modular .. and pretty much inaudible to the ears. It's called the ModXtream Pro; it is SLI certified, comes in a nice black modular design and we'll take a look at the 600 Watt version of it.
