GeForce 7900 GS review - Guru3D.com 2006

NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS - A Guru's Threesome
NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS reference
XFX GeForce 7900 GS Extreme
Sparkle GeForce 7900 GS (SLI)

Model: GeForce 7900 GS 256MB
Price: 199 <> 219 EUR/USD

Armed with a license to game NVIDIA has unleashed yet another set of graphics card on-to the crowded graphics card market. Today they present you the GeForce 7900 GS and the GeForce 7950 GT. Both an absolutely interesting videocard when it comes to price versus performance.

First things first .. the reviews for the GeForce 7950 GT are slated and still under NDA until next week. We can already tell you that the 7950 GT is a 299 USD graphics card with 512MB memory (board partners can opt 256MB also), has 24 pixel pipelines, 8 vertex shaders, a 550 MHZ primary core tact frequency with it's memory running at 1400 MHz. Anyway, more on that card next week, I promise !

The GeForce 7900 GS is what we'll be testing today. We have basically three segments on the market low-end, mainstream and high-end products. A product at 199 USD/EUR is to be considered a mid-range/mainstream product. So the GeForce 7900 GS is to be considered mid-range .. but the thing is .. that's just not the case.

If I need to position the GeForce 7900 GS then it would be at the lower range of the high-end segment of graphics cards. And Oh dear Gosh darn it dear Hilbert  ... a high-end card for roughly 200 bucks you ask ? .. yes, it's true.

By all means this is not a "new" product though. The graphics core is based on the NVIDIA series G71 graphics core, clocked pretty much the same as that very sexy GeForce 7900 GT, yet this product has a quad less pixel pipelines which brings it down to 20. And that might get a couple of true Guru's thinking a little .. it does sound a lot like the 7800 GT (yet slightly faster) doesn't it ? Why then release this product ? Because it'll compete with team Red .. ATI's Radeon X1800 GTO series of cards.

So then, you know the drill by now; we got cards ! In this article we will review NVDIA's reference GeForce 7900 GS, The XFX GeForce 7900 GS Extreme amd Sparkle send out two of these little gem's called GeForce 7900 GS for a little SLI action. All cards are armed with a luxurious 256 MB of GDDR3 (256-bit) memory. First we'll cover the GeForce 7900 GS in general, then we'll look at the differences in software bundles, do a little photo shoot, fire off some benchmarks at them, combine them in SLI mode, overclock them and then will wrap everything up in a nice conclusion.

Follow me please, to the next page, on you go ... it's Hammer time !
