Need for Speed Underground 2 review

Story and Gameplay
The game starts off where the NFSU ended. Some thing happened to you. A rival racer tried to put you out of business. You were involved in a car crash which was carried out by the rivals and now you are starting all over. The game tried to unfold new street racing career with story to support with in NFSU2. You come to the new Bayview City. The first new thing you will notice in the game is 2D cut scenes, similar to that we saw in Max Payne but it’s not used as effectively as it was in Max Payne. I liked the 3D cut scenes of the NFSU better. And Brooke Burke has given the voice to the cut scenes and all instructions. She is 2D though ;)

Once again you have to start from scratch. To start with you get slow car like ino NFSU and thus the racing can be somewhat boring to start with. The best part is in this game you get full open city to roam around unlike the fixed racetracks that we had in NFSU. Starting out not all parts of the city are open. They are unlocked as you progress in the game Career mode. But its really nice to have big open city to race in. Also the new addition is the actual street racing. In the first NFSU all races took place in the circuits and you never got to move freely in the city. This is totally changed in this new version of NFSU. You can roam around the city and find other street racers to race with you. This is really cool idea and this is what actual street racing is all about. Unfortunately the street racing won’t fetch you big money. All that was present in the original NFSU is there in the NFSU2. There is normal Circuit, sprint, drag and drift races and the new addition to this is the Street X racing. Street X is basically normal racing on drift tracks.

In addition there are few U.R.L, Underground Racing League. This is nothing but the tournament mode that we saw in the NFSU1 and usually fetches big money. The races are spread all over the city and you have to drive to the race location to enter the race. Races are shown as colored marks on the map and flashing notifications in the game. Even though the races are located on the map, actual racing doesn’t start on the open street but a circuit is loaded similar to that of NFSU1. Also the upgrade parts are unlocked on winning particular races There are plenty of races and it can take a while to complete all races and move on to next stage or to unlock a performance or visual upgrade. This can keep you away from good stuff for long time and at times can be frustrating as they are spread all over the map. Unlike the NFSU1, to upgrade or mod your car now you have to actually drive to the shops. There are different types of shops like Body shop, Performance shop, Car Specialist shop, graphic shop, etc and they are spread around the city. Each store position is marked by a particular and distinct colored light on the street near the store and stores will only show up on the map after you find them in the city. So you have to drive around the city to locate these stores.
