Knights of the Old Republic: The Sith Lords

The Verdict

So, was KOTOR II a trip down memory lane, or another Star Wars disappointment? Well, as far as sequels go, it is certainly more "Empire Strikes Back" than "Attack of the Clones." Obsidian does a good job of retaining Biowares excellent KOTOR formula and fans of the first game will certainly enjoy The Sith Lords. All the tweaks and changes Obsidian have made are in general very good, particularly the more involved level of interaction with your companions and the extra Jedi classes. There is a nice combination of some new worlds to explore and the welcome return of some old haunts. The extra force powers and inventory items are welcome additions too, although you do get the feeling Obsidian could have pushed the boat out a little further. Some graphical improvements are definitely needed to the game engine, particularly if (in the true way of Star-Wars) they go on to make a third game to complete the trilogy. There could also have been more time spent working out some of the intricacies of the story line that made the first game such a genuine classic.

There is plenty of content here for even the most devoted gamer, with a single play though taking up to 40 hours, and a replay needed at least to experience the paths of both the light and darkside of the force. Naturally, this game has bags of replay ability, and will keep you busy longer than most.

All in all this is a Star Wars sequel at its best, and one that deserves a place in any Star Wars gamer’s collection. Add to this that it is an extremely well accomplished RPG, and it has a very broad appeal.

All I can do now is wait in hope for the final part of the KOTOR trilogy.

May the force be with you…
