 Gigabyte 108 MBit Wireless

By: Anthony Sims Edited by  | Published: March 5, 2004

Conclusion

I haven’t had as much time to play with the kit as I would have liked. However setup and general use was really simple and efficient. Help if needed was available but I would preferred to see the help on a per screen basis in the routers setup rather than the large help topic that covered every subject, that’s only a minor point.

Speed has been a real plus compared to standard 802.11g communication. Since the technology is propriety you must stick to the same chipset company (at the moment GIGABYTE use Atheros) in order to make use of the speed increases that we have seen. An extra 12Mbit over a normal 802.11g setup is not something to be sneered at, in fact it brings Wireless communication at a level it's getting more interesting over 100Mbit Wired Ethernet.

Gigabyte in my opinion have got an easy to setup and use, fast wireless product with advanced features to secure the network, along with expandability for more secure comms like 802.x. If you need the speed, but cant use wires, then Gigabyte have defiantly got a product that you should have a look into. Highly recommended with two thumbs up.

Oh and hey, the best thing yet .. it's price. The B49G router end-user price with 19%VAT is about Euro 89. The PCMCIA WMAG is about 48 Euro.
