Gigabyte Odin PLUS 700W PSU review

By: Hilbert Hagedoorn Edited by Joshua Finger | Published: October 7, 2009

The Odin PLUS series power supplies

So the Odin PLUS series was designed with several key aspects in mind. First off, this 700 Watt version is beefy enough to run very high-end graphics cards. Though SLI certified it only comes with two 6/8-pin PCIe graphics headers, more on that later though.

Design was of the utmost importance as well with the ODIN Plus as the most popular marketing item was applied to it, yes it uses only solid capacitors; quality Japanese made main capacitors. With this capacitor design, Gigabyte claims that ODIN Plus reduces ripple and noise, as well as steadies current output. All of that should help when we talk lifespan and stability of course.

The Odin line has proven itself a trusted PSU series. The PSUs PLUS range now covers 500W to the new 700W. Featuring an 80+ Bronze Certification, the Odin PLUS offers one a high efficiency yet did not make silver or gold certification with ( 20% and 100% load) and 85+ (at 50% load) high efficiency.

Connectors:

  • 24-pin Motherboard Connector 1x
  • 4+4-pin +12V CPU Connector 1x
  • (6+2)-pin PCI-E 2.0 Connectors 2x
  • SATA Connectors 6x
  • 4-pin Peripheral Connectors 4x
  • 4-pin Floppy Connector 1x

Now I already mentioned this shortly, but connectors wise things are a bit tame. Especially for a SLI certified power supply rated at 700W and four 12v rails you'd expect more PCIe headers than just two. The good news is though that they are in the new 6/8pin format, which a lot of higher end graphics cards these days require. also we spot only four Molex connectors which we feel is a little short. All main leads have 50cm length of cabling and with multiple connectors per wire the cable will stretch to80 cm in length.

Looking at the innards, we do have to admit that the Odin PLUS definitely has got enough horsepower under the hood. Four 12v rails each rated at 19 Amps and a decent amount of wattage on the processor rails as well.
