GeForce 7950 GT 512MB Shootout (review)

By: Hilbert Hagedoorn Edited by  | Published: September 13, 2006

XFX GeForce 7950 GT 512MB Extreme

We'll start of with XFX, XFX send out the Extreme version of the GeForce 7950 GT card which I have to admit again is pretty darn impressive to look at. Again we immediately spot the UV reactive DVI connectors, completely stealthy black PCB design (NV reference based), a VERY interesting cooler (it is passive). In short; it simply is one dangerously cool dude to look at. Seriously, have a look at the photo shoot which will follow soon.

Since this is an extreme edition obviously you'll receive higher clocks straight out of the box. Where NVIDIA's reference model is clocked at 550 on the core and 1400 on the memory XFX will deliver this card to you slightly higher clocked at 570 MHz on the core yet a standard 1400 MHz on the memory.

So at default you'll get a little more performance straight out of the box. The price tag for this extreme model will be higher though. Basically you'll receive drivers and basic necessities and even a full game... Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter (yes!), which is a fantastic title and also great value. We tested the extreme version and yes .. extreme will immediately mean more expensive, as this product will set you back 359 EUR. In the box we find:

  • Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter
  • Driver CD with a set of tools
  • S-Video Cable
  • DVI to VGA Adaptor
  • 6-pin PSU power connector
  • Manual
  • A seriously nice looking card

There's nothing much to be said here other then you'll receive the basics to get started. Okay, I really do find that videocard design extremely sexy, with that passive cooler. In a couple of pages the in-depth photoshoot will follow. But look at that !

Point of View 7950 GT 512MB

To ensure we bring you another Point of View ;) we also tested the Point of View GeForce 7950 GT 512MB card. Point of View is following the reference specification precisely. The card comes with a nice bundle though as there are two full games bundled and all that for a 309 EUR price. In the box we find:

  • Brothers in arms
  • Price of Perisa
  • S-Video Cable
  • RCA Cable
  • Conversion connecter Mini-Din to RCA
  • HDTV Output cable (RCA component)
  • DVI to VGA Adaptor
  • 6-pin power connector
  • GeForce 7950 GT

Aside from the software titles everything included for connectivity is also present including a RCA composite cable to a HDTV component block. You can't deny that this is a good package to get started with.

Of course next to the bundle we'll find the GeForce 7950 GT card. I can be brief about this lovely little beast. It's a 100% reference card with a Point of View shim on the reference cooler. As our tweaking session will show, it overclocks beautifully. And the design .. well we'll show you all of this in our photo shoot.
