 GeForce 6600 GT Reference Review

By: Hilbert Hagedoorn Edited by  | Published: September 7, 2004

The Verdict
Let's face it, 2004 is a good year for NVIDIA !

NVIDIA believes in market diversity, a product for any budget. The new mid-range GeForce 6600 GT product is good, really really good. It completely fills a gap that has been there since the GeForce FX series, which lacked Shader performance. This product is based on the GeForce 6800 design, which makes it really powerful.

GeForce 6600 and a GeForce 6600 GT. Both cards will have 8 pixel pipes and shall be equipped with 128-bit memory. The GT version is of course faster but here's an interesting fact, it will also be SLI compatible. The 128-bit memory is going to hurt the card when using hefty AA/AF choices though and gaming in the highest resolutions will show the same behavior. It'll have a rough time in there. But when we look at resolutions up to 1024x768 or even 1280x1024 combined with hefty shaders, well then the GPU is way more important and this particular GPU has the same extraordinary power that we recognized in the 6800 series. So the question is: does a mid-end product buyer intend to play his or her games at the highest resolution available? Personally I don't think so. This might be this years perfect product for that particular buyer. Let's talk games as it is why you are buying the product, one word... fantastic. I mean, Doom 3 did an average 40 frames per second in 1024x768 resolution with 8x Anisotropic filtering and 4x Antialiasing enabled. That's just staggering for a 200 USD product! I do have to remind you that we where looking at the 6600 GT review. When I look at the specification of the standard 6600 model then I can see a big difference in clock frequency, which will limit that product for sure. We hope to bring you a review on that one soon.

Yes true, it's not exactly the Nitro Oxide powered 6800 GT but with a clockspeed of 500 MHz the 6600GT version gives a lot of fillrate. The standard 6600 will be a wee bit of an underdog I'm afraid, yet we still need to test it ourselves before making conclusions about that one. Both cards should be able to deliver excellent performance at a very reasonable and most of all competitive price and we know that for a fact with the 6600 GT!

I know it's a bit early, but the GeForce 6600 series graphics cards are likely to be very popular under the Christmas tree this year. With a suggested retail price of ~200 USD you don't have to spend bucket loads of your money. This product is ideal, it's a impressive new card for the money. I'm very impressed and most of all extremely pleased with what NVIDIA has accomplished here.

Very nice indeed !
