GeForce 7900 GS micro architecture
The "default/normal"
clocked GeForce 7900 GS is based on a 90nm fabrication process, runs with a core frequency of 450 MHz (50 MHz faster) and has a default memory frequency of 660. So quite honestly this is a GeForce 7900 GT (7950 GT) with 4 less pixel processors and one vertex processors disabled. And that's a lot of punch for the money.
This little creature will punk out the GeForce 6800 Ultra easily which was the most extreme high-end card a year and a half ago.
Okay, some other specifications.
- 7 Vertex Shading Units
- 20 Pixel pipelines
- 256MB 256-bit 2ns (8x32) GDDR3 Memory
- PCI Express x16 Compatibility (PCI Express Compliant)
- Integrated NVIDIA TV Encoder (HDTV, S-Video, Composite,)
- Integrated NVIDIA VIVO (S-Video, Composite,)
- Dual DVI-I Connectors
- NVIDIA PureVideo Technology
- DVD + HDTV Decode assist up to 1920x1080p resolution
- Integrated Dual 400MHz RAMDACs
- Two Dual Link TMDS DVI Connector
- NVIDIA Digital Vibrance Control (DVC) 3.0
- Support for Microsoft Video Mixer Renderer (VMR)
- Advanced adaptive de-interlacing
And for the freaks: 278 Million transistors, 7 Vertex Shader processors, 20 Pixel Shader processors which all bind at 16 ROPs.
The Galaxy GeForce 7900 GS 256MB
Galaxy
sent out the Zalman edition of the 7900 GS which I have to admit is pretty darn impressive, and I do mean that physically. The card comes on a blue reference looking PCB yet with some distinct differences. Obviously the high clocks rock, you get to play around with a pre-overclocked yet 100% stable card, we did not experince one lockup whatsoever and neither were the temperatures drastic at all.
At defaults 7900 GS card is clocked at 450 MHz. The Galaxy is clocked at a 550 MHz frequency! The default memory on a GS is clocked at 1320 MHz, this Galaxy GeForce 7900 GS is clocked at 1500 MHz. That's 10 maybe a 20% performance advantage over normal GeForce 7900 GS. Obviously overclocking usually results in bigger fans and thus more noise. This is not the case with this card as we'll notice that it is properly equipped with a Zalman cooler. Also notice the smaller details; even the memory has little ramsinks (which have no use with BGA memory these days), but they do look cool.

On default you'll get a a good percentage more performance straight out of the box. The price tag will be not be higher though, as Galaxy did save money on the software bundle. Basically you'll receive drivers and basic necessities. And you know what, there's nothing wrong with that.
- Driver CD with a set of tools
- S-Video Cable
- DVI to VGA Adaptor
- 6-pin PSU power connector
- Manual
There's nothing much to be said here other then you'll receive the basics to get started. Where others go for the golden software bundle, Galaxy goes for the more expensive cooler and high performance. There's nothing wrong with that, no Sir.
