 Flatout game review

By: Shripad | Edited by  | Published: April 10, 2005

Your car will run even when your engine is on fire due to damage. Your wheels will start wobbling, your body work will be all gone and you can still win the race. That's how unrealistic this game gets. But don't get me wrong. It's all fun to drive around the circuit with your engine on fire, your  car hood gone, your windows shattered, bodywork all smashed up and wheels wobbling as if they will fall off. But they won't and your handling and speed won't be affected much either. And yeah if you hit the other cars or trees or walls too hard your driver will fly out of the car screaming. It's really funny to see that. When I first saw that happen I almost fell out of my chair. Also as you race, the damage you cause to your car and others actually give you nitrous, which you can use when needed. It's similar to what we saw in Need for Speed Underground 2 where you get nitrous for avoiding the accidents or performing special tricks. Here you get nitrous for exactly opposite, for the damage you cause. There are some tracks where you can forget that you have breaks and go flat out. Floor that accelerator pedal and just keep racing and there are tracks that give you totally different experiences. When it comes to BONUS tracks, I got to give the game developers some credit for originality. I mean can any one of you think of the game in which the aim is to throw your driver out of car as high or far as possible?

Can you imagine using the driver as a dart and toss him out of the car to hit targets? Have you imagined a game where you use a human driver as bowling ball? If not then that's what you do in bonus tracks. And there is good old destruction derby as well, where the aim is to destroy your opponent's car and be the last man standing. As you win you get money. Well you must use that money right? You have lots of upgrade options and as you progress in the game new cars are unlocked giving you more choice and variety. There are lots of engines, drive terrain, body, suspension upgrades, etc that help you get your car from stock to a highly upgraded racing machine. Basically this is the kind of game you will want to play when you come home from school or work and have some free time and want to take out your anger and stress out on a poor virtual driver. Toss him up in the sky or release your anger on the AI cars.

Developers have given you plenty to keep you busy for hours. It's basically an endless game. You can keep playing and playing and playing. The hint of originality is also there when it comes to game play in the form of BONUS section.

As usual with racing games you have an option to go online or on the network and race against your buddy.
