Corsair Padlock 2 - securing your data ...

Secure data and keeping data secure are two different things. Often when I am on the road I carry around sensitive materials stored on a USB flash drive. And though you can select several protections these days, they are all a bit unhandy, often software and OS based and thus you tend not to use it.

Now I am not alone in that, over the past year or two here in the Netherlands for example on several occasions news headlines informed us of actual military data or data from a Judge got found on the street and the latter one in a bus, unprotected. Literally somebody finds a USB flash drive checks it out and finds sensitive data. That is so wrong on many levels. It's the result modern flash storage really, carrying data on a USB flash drive is simply very handy and the storage units is just light to carry around, you pop it into the USB port and bingo you can access your data. But meanwhile chances of loosing the device increased significantly.

In the last twelve months we however have seen numerous ideas and developments to add a layer of security to flash storage, so that IF you should ever loose that storage unit, at the very least your data is protected. One that was recently released is from Corsair, their Corsair Padlock 2. While it's not intended as uber-fast storage device with blazing performance it's designed to keep your data more secure. It does this by adding a 256-bit hardware encryption layer over your data protected by a numeric key, a pin code which you can enter very conveniently on the storage device itself.

Well have a look and then let's head onwards into the review.
